People Magazine, of all publications, just came out with an issue that includes one of those editorial messages in which the writer attempts to presume that all rational people are in full agreement about something.

In this case, the presumed starting point that we all supposedly agree on admits that law — and nothing else — is the best and only way to keep evil lunatics with firearms from murdering other people.

Jess Cagle, the magazine’s editorial director, has an online post promoting the upcoming issue’s focus on gun violence. The new issue will publish the contact information for every member of Congress with an exhortation, as Cagle says, to “make sure they know from now on that routine responses just won’t cut it.”

Cagle quotes President Obama’s response to the latest mass murder at an Oregon community college, lamenting, as Obama did, that such responses have become routine.

“What are we doing about gun violence in America?” he asks.

“… As a country we clearly aren’t doing enough, and our elected officials’ conversations about solutions usually end in political spin.”

Clearly, Cagle and the rest of People’s editorial decision-makers view mass murder as a problem that can be solved with more laws and not one that can be solved through culture, morality, civility, and — perish the thought — an open embrace of the 2nd Amendment.
